Pit Profiles: Re-profiled
3rd October 2015 – 17th January 2016
Pit Profiles: Re-profiled brings together original portraits by artist H. Andrew Freeth (1912 – 1986) and contemporary photographer Anton Want.
The exhibition was inspired by the work of Freeth, who was the first artist to be commissioned by the National Coal Board to record miners across the coalfields. His intimate portraits were published alongside their individual stories as ‘Pit Profiles’ in the NCB’s monthly magazine Coal, between 1947 and 1952.
Shown alongside Freeth’s paintings are Anton Want’s portraits and oral-history interviews, which provide an artistic legacy honouring one of Britain’s oldest industries and the people who have helped to shape it.
