We printed the first Doncopolitan magazine back in 2014 to prove that there is no such thing as a ‘cultural desert’, a slur aimed at Doncaster at the time. It was a high quality publication which treated Doncaster — and the amazingly talented creatives who call it home — with the respect it deserved. Since then, arts and culture in our city have gone from strength to strength.

We want to build a better, braver, brighter, greener city for all. Doncaster has a proud industrial heritage, but it is also made up of 60% agricultural land. It is perfectly placed as a hub for business, but it is also home to some of the most important and sensitive ecologies in Europe. We have one of the best microclimates in the north, and the Soil Association says that we have one of the most diverse and interesting soil maps in the country. We are among the top 10% of economically deprived areas in the UK, but we have everything we need to build a new and unique, planet-friendly, forward-thinking, peri-urban paradise which reimagines what a city could be in the 21st Century.

This is the goal of Doncopolitan. To accept the contradictions and tensions which make Doncaster what it is and use them to build better. As our sister project Bentley Urban Farm has shown, every problem is a solution. We just need to change the way we think about — and interact with — the place we call home. This is the goal of Doncopolitan.
