Giving Young people a second chance

Foxy Mex talks to a local charity that helping you people get back on track

Although we all know and love Mexborough’s Historic The Empress Ballroom now turned super gym for fitness freaks and some of the regions best boxing athletes.

You might be surprised to know that the building home to an exceptional charity working hard to transform the lives of young people in the area.

Dearne Valley Professional Development Centre DVPDC, is founded by husband and wife team John and Jacky Irwin.

JonJo Irwin is widely known local as a British Boxing Champion, who also struggled at school and left with no qualifications. With the help of Ernie Oxer, a well know boxing coach in Denaby Main, he trained hard, learnt self discipline and became a world class boxer even receiving a gold medal in the Common Wealth Games in 1989.

Jon has a lot of empathy for young people who might struggle to fit in at school, he wanted to start the center to give young people a second chance and help them back on track.

Jackie has been working as a teacher and art and design lecture for the last 15 years. Jackie uses her creative skill as well as manages the day to day running of the center, making sure that the kids get a chance to gain qualifications in a wide range of subjects. After a recent assessment from NCFE they were informed there “Art and Design” work was “exceptional.

One of the highlights of the project for a lot of people that attend is the the young people get to train with other professional and aspiring professional boxers at the Ernie Oxer Boxing Club, this includes Jamie Cunningham, ……..
